
(Beijing, February 2) The third day of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Swimming China Open saw host China earn four straight wins in the seven final races staged at the National Aquatics Center this morning.
Winning his second gold medal at the tournament, China's Zhang Lin who had also set a new national record in today's men's 400m freestyle final became a scintillating star in the newly-inaugurated "Water Cube".
In the women's 50m freestyle final staged first, German veteran Britta Steffen clinched an easy victory with a time of 24.93 after winning the women's 100m freestyle final yesterday. Delaroli Cazziolato of Brazil finished second and Steffen's teammate Daniela Goetz came in third.
In the men's 100m breaststroke final, Japanese swimmers Tateishi Ryo and Suenaga Yuta finished one-two, in 1:01.58 and 1:02.10 respectively. Hungarian veteran Daniel Gyurta placed fifth.
In the women's 200m breaststroke final, Jung Seul Ki of Korea placed first with 2:25.16, followed by her teammate Jeong Darae. Qi Hui, who had earned an Olympic Qualification A berth and would compete in the women's 100m breaststroke preliminaries this evening, did not bring out her best and only finished eighth.
In the men's 400m freestyle final, Zhang Lin clocked 3:45.04, a new national record 1.13 secs faster than his personal best set in Australia. Zhang's teammate Sun Yang and Pawel Korzeniowski of Poland came in second and third respectively.
In the women's 200m freestyle final, Zhu Qianwei of China clinched the gold with 1:58.90, a new personal best of hers. The silver and bronze medals went to Annika Lurz of Germany and Otylia Jedrzejczak of Poland respectively.
The women's 800m freestyle final saw China's You Meihong coming from behind to overtake Romania's Cozma Lonela after the first 450 meters to win in 8:31.18. Another Chinese swimmer Li Mo finished second by a margin of 9.18 secs.
The last event contested this morning was the men's 4x200m freestyle relay, in which China, consisting of Huang Shaohua, Zhang Zhitao, Xin Tong and Zhang Lin, overtook their German counterparts at 700 meters to win with 7:23.15, thanks to Zhang Lin's painstaking efforts 700 meters into the race.
The heats of four events, women's 400m freestyle, men's 100m freestyle, women's 100 breaststroke and men's 200 breaststroke, will begin at 6:30 this evening.
The "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Swimming China Open will be held at the National Aquatics Center from January 31 to February 5.
