(Beijing, February 2) Pawel Korzeniowski of Poland, who had won the men's 200m freestyle silver of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Swimming China Open, earned his second medal by taking the bronze in the 400m freestyle at the National Aquatics Center today.
Pawel Korzeniowski clocked 3:49.94 in the 400m freestyle and the gold went to China's Zhang Lin with a time of 3:45.05.
Korzeniowski's personal best in the 200m butterfly is 1:54.93 set in Japan in 2007, second only to the world record of 1:52.09 created by American prodegy Michael Phelps at the 2007 Melbourne FINA World Championships, and he also finished in 3:38.72 to grab the title of the 400m freestyle at the 2007 European Short Course Swimming Championships.
"Paul Biedermann is one of the top European swimmers and my coach asked me to set my own rhythm in the race." Korzeniowski explained his loss in the 200m event.
Commenting on China's Wu Peng, his rival in the 200m butterfly event in the coming Beijing Olympic Games, Korzeniowski noted that "He's pretty fast and is likely to win a medal in the Olympics."
Eyeing the 200m butterfly gold at the current China Open, Korzeniowski predicted several Japanese swimmers could be the biggest setback for his title project.
