Roundup: Qi Hui makes 100m breast final

(Beijing, January 2) The third day of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Swimming China Open saw heats of four events contested at the National Aquatics Center. China's ace swimmer Qi Hui succeeded in reaching the Olympic Qualification A mark again, topping the group to make the women's 100m breaststroke final scheduled for tomorrow morning.

In the women's 400m freestyle heats, China's 14-year-old You Meihong clocked 4:11.22 to place first, followed by Otylia Jedrzejczak of Poland in 4:12.26, or 8.03 secs short of her entry time, and Cozma Lonela of Romania with 4:12.67. Another Chinese swimmer Tan Miao pulled out of the race due to illness.

In the following men's 100m freestyle heats, 27-year-old Stefan Nystrand finished first in 49.31. China's Huang Shaohua and Sweden's Petter Stymne were second and third with 50.01 and 50.03 respectively.

Chinese veteran Qi Hui came in first in the women's 100m breaststroke heats with 1:08.22, 0.39 faster than the Olympic Qualification A mark of 1:09.01, with Korean Jung Seul Ki finishing second in 1:09.48 and Chinese newcomer Sun Ye third in 1:09.78. Tamura Nanaka, a pre-race favorite from Japan, placed fifth with 1:10.35.

In the star-studded men's 200m breaststroke heats, Hungarian Daniel Gyurta, silver medalist at Athens 2004, clocked 2:15.20 to place third. Laszio Cseh, Gyurta's teammate and short-course world record holder in both the 200m and 400m individual medley, was second with 2:14.16. Leading the group was Japan's Tateishi Ryo (2:13.89), who had won the men's 100m breaststroke final this morning.

The finals of these four events, together with the women's 4x100m free relay final and men's 1500m freestyle final (fast heats), will be held tomorrow morning.
