Roundup of Day 4 finals: Qi claims first title

(Beijing, February 3) On the fourth day of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Swimming China Open, China's Qi Hui and Zhang Lin claimed victories in the women's 100m breaststroke and men's 1500m freestyle while Sweden's Stefan Nystrand was unrivalled in the men's 100m freestyle final. Of the six finals contested this morning, Germany and China took two titles each, while the other two went to Sweden and Japan respectively.

In today's first race, women's 400m freestyle final, German veteran Annika Lurz took an early lead from the first 50 meters and eventually won with a time of 4:10.60. China's newcomer You Meihong was 1.85 secs slower to place second, followed by Polish veteran Otylia Jedrzejczak in 4:14.05.

In the men's 100m freestyle final that followed, Swedish veteran Stefan Nystrand carried off the title as expected with 48.94. Nicholas Dias Dos Santos of Brazil and Huang Shaohua of China finished second and third respectively.

In the women's 100m breaststroke final, attention was fixed on China's Qi Hui and her Korean archrival Jung Seul Ki. Eventually Qi clocked 1:09.24 to edge her Korean rival by a narrow margin of 0.06 sec. Qi's teammate Sun Ye finished third with 1:09.71.

In the men's 200m breaststroke final, Tateishi Ryo of Japan, who had already won the men's 100m breaststroke, clinched his second gold with a time of 2:13.61, followed by Hungarian veteran Daniel Gyurta (2:13.98) and Poland'sSlawomir Kuczko (2:14.23) respectively.

In the men's 1500m freestyle final (fast heats), China's Zhang Lin clinched an easy win in 15:05.57 to earn his third gold at the tournament. Dragos Coman of Romania finished second by a margin of 29.82 secs.

In the women's 4x100m freestyle relay, the German team consisting of Britta Steffen, Daniela Goetz, Daniela Schreiber and Annika Lurz was crowned with 3:41.07, followed by China (Xu Yanwei, Zhu Wenrui, Li Ji and Zhu Qianwei) by a margin of 7.07 secs. Currently the German team is also holders of the world record for the event.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. this evening, the heats of five events, namely the men's 50m freestyle, women's 200m individual medley, men's 200 individual medley, women's 200m backstroke and men's 100 backstroke, will be held at the National Aquatics Center.
