

(Beijing, February 4) On the fifth day of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Swimming China Open, Chinese veteran swimmer Qi Hui claimed the title of the women's 200m individual medley to win her second gold medal at the tournament, and reached the Olympic Qualification A mark once again. In the meantime, the host team clinched a narrow win in the women's 4x100m medley relay. Of the six finals contested this morning, China and Hungary took two gold medals each, while the other two went to Sweden and Germany respectively.
In the opening race, the men's 50m freestyle final, Swedish veteran Stefan Nystrand edged teammate Petter Stymne by a narrow margin of 0.03 sec to take the title with a time of 22.39. Nicholas Dias Dos Santos of Brazil finished third.
In the women's 200m individual medley final, Qi Hui wrapped up an easy victory with 2:14.14, her second title in this open, to successfully accomplish her mission of reaching Olympic Qualification A marks in three events. Choi Hye Ra of Korea was 2.57 slower to place second, followed by Annika Mehlhorn of Germany.
In the men's 200m individual medley final, Hungarian veteran Laszio Cseh clinched an easy win in 2:00.13. Sano Hidemasa of Japan finished second by a margin of 2.23 secs. The bronze went to Fabio Carvalho of Portugal.
In the women's 200m backstroke final, Nikolett Szepesi of Hungary carried off the title with a time of 2:13.33, while Chen Yanyan of China came in second by a margin of 0.52. German veteran Antje Buschschulte ranked third with 2:15.30.
In the men's 100m backstroke final, German veteran Helge Meeuw clocked 55.07 to win the event, with Korean Sung Min ranking second by a margin of 0.36, and Shi Feng of China, who had won the first gold at the tournament, finishing third.
In the women's 4x100m medley relay final, the host team consisting of Chen Yanyan, Sun Ye, Xu Yanwei and Zhu Qianwei beat their Germany counterparts with a time of 4:07.61, or 0.18 sec faster, to win the gold. The German squad had to be content with a second place despite the efforts by their anchorman Britta Steffen.
The heats of five more events, the men's 200m butterfly, women's 100m butterfly, men's 200 backstroke, women's 100m backstroke and men's 400m individual medley, will be staged beginning at 6:30 this evening.
The "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 Swimming China Open will be held at the National Aquatics Center from January 31 to February 5.
